no tv?!

We got a year of digital cable from Kyle's parents for a wedding gift. Well, the year officially runs out next month (May 15th) and we're trying to decide what to do. We thought we'd just cancel it completely. More time to spend together or doing something productive, one less bill to pay. So, today at lunch, I called Kyle to make sure it was ok for me to do that. After a minute of silence he said "Do you really think you can live without tv?" Yes, I do. I've done it before. I haven't been watching too much lately, anyway. Too many good books to read. It's almost summer, which means we'll be swimming after work or riding our bikes or something. Do we really need it? I didn't cancel today, but the more I think about it, the more I think that it's a good idea. Do you guys have cable or not? Could you live without it? Oh, and without cable, we could get one channel, so it's basically cable or nothing.

I say do it Miranda. Mish and I don't have cable and we only get one channel. Of course we are real busy with our daughter, and if there is anything that I want to watch we only have to drive 15 minutes and hangout with the in-laws. Of course, I wouldn't mind having ESPN 24/7 but I wouldn't want to pay $50 a month for it either... and I don't.

We've never had cable and for a long time didn't even have a tv, and...I'M STILL ALIVE! AND VERY HAPPY! Actually I don't know if even we get any channels on our TV, I just watch a movie on it every now and then.

There is no way we could live without TV. Whether it's The OC, ESPN, hunting channel, or Desperate Housewives...we would die!!! We just had some friends over for supper tonight and watched the Twins game and it was a blast. I honestly don't think that I could live without TV....however, that could all change here shortly (about 4 mo) when we have a little baby to take up all of our attention and time.

2 for, 2 against. kyle wants to just get basic cable - still get some of the sports he wants. if we could only get ESPN, we'd be set. i think we could do without this summer...

In DC Comcast used to run these ominous ads warnign about the stealing of cable and how you will be persectuted and pay $20000 and go to jail and they will take your first born.

DON'T DO IT! j.k.

I hear you, Mandy. Right now, my landlord pays the cable which comes with HBO. It's super nice and now I am addicted. If I move, I am going to have to get it. However, if I would have never had it, i don't think I would have missed it that much.

Why don't you push back the decision to Oct./Nov. GO through the summer without it and see how it goes.

See, I think if there's any time to go without, it's over the summer. There's so much to do. Maybe in the winter, when we're stuck inside, we should have tv.

You don't need cable Miranda.. read a book and exercise that brain of yours. If you're not careful mine will surpass yours. As you know I've never really watched TV.. just usually always had a movie in. I guess I have cable now, Blase and I busted into the box and took the filter off.. that way I can charge my roommates a cable fee... ha! J/K! TV sux!

We haven't had regular TV for about 6 years because in China we couldn't understand what they were saying usually, and here for some reason we can get video but not audio.

We still watch DVDs and stuff, so we're not without media, but it's a blessing Mandy, believe me. TV can be an escape from real living and real relationships. I'm not saying TV is evil, but it becomes a default mode instead of a conscious choice.

The best part of this is that our kids don't see commercials, and we have total control over what they see. Our kids don't get programmed TV because they've only ever seen videos and I'm really glad.
